Ministry of Happiness - London House Party

Report...

Phil has for a while been pestering me to write the reports for the Societies activities again as I kind of got distracted with other organising work, but while I got chance I thought I'd better catch up and keep Phil happy.

This was a house party hosted by an ex Brookes student called John who wasn't actually a member of the Society, but was living with Phil so he was involved in the social side of the society. He graduated in 2005 and moved to London. He and his house mates were having a house party with the theme of Alice in Wonderland, and invited the society through Phil and the Ministry of Happiness. It was attended by myself (Adders, Chairman), Phil (Minister of Happiness and First Aid Officer) and Rich.

Phil and Rich drove to London during the afternoon, to start partying early. I was doing some group coursework during the day so I didn't go until the evening. I got the Oxford Tube at about 7pm, after getting some alcohol. I was due to meet Phil and John at Shepherds Bush, but when I got off the bus they weren't there and only turned up after about fifteen minutes. When they did turn up, John was dressed as the Mad Hatter and Phil was dressed as a Cheshire cat, though apparently she started the evening as the white rabbit, no mater which costume he was wearing, the sight of a bloke dressed as a Cheshire cat and a Mad Hatter wandering round London is a sight which must be seen, especially when they walked round Sainsbury's to get some drinks and fags. On the walk to John's house we went straight past BBC Television Centre and the rest of the BBC Worldwide buildings. We got to the house and immediately started drinking, unfortunately while John was out the Mulled Wine had been finished, but John made some more. The house had been decorated well, with Alice in Wonderland playing on the TV, the book on lectern, sweets with “EAT ME” written above them and a set of Optics with “DRINK ME” written above them. We settled into some drinking in the kitchen and on the balcony while people arrived. We got to meet the rest of the house mates who were dressed as Judge Cat and Alice, apparently Phil was tempted to come as Alice, but thankfully he didn't. There was some dancing (when the CD player would work) and plenty of chatting on the balcony. I remember chatting to an Aussie woman about IT support.

After quite a while me and Rich decided that it was kebab time so we set off in search of a take away. We obviously hadn't had enough to drink at this point though as we struggled to find one, had we been drunk we would have found a kebab house straight away. I know from experience that when you get really drunk, no matter where you are, even if you don't know the area, you will always end up with a kebab, you may not even know where you got it from. Me and Rich didn't manage to find any form of take-away, despite asking directions, apparently all the take-away's closed at midnight, we did manage to find a rail yard with Euro Tunnel signs all over it, which in our not quite sober state did make us have to think how far we had walked, it was actually a storage yard for the Eurostar trains. We eventually settled for a sandwich in a filling station. On returning to the house we rang the door bell, but got no response, no problem, we'll just ring Phil, who's in the house and can let us in. The only problem with this plan was that when we called Phil, he didn't seem to know which front door we wanted him to open, he told us that he couldn't open the door as he wasn't in Germany at the moment, then asked if we meant his front door in Oxford, proof of the states which Phil has been known to get into.

When Phil finally found the front door and worked out what the handle was for, he let us in and we had a few more drinks and a bit of a dance, though the music seemed to have changed from Muse at the start of the night to some very hardcore drum n bass. The crowds started to thin out as the locals went home and some of those staying over found space to kip in the rooms. For me and Rich, it was a space on the floor in John's room. The party went on for another hour or two, apparently with Phil and John nearly pulling two decent girls, but something put them off.

When we woke up the following morning, we went back into the living room to find Phil on a pull out Sofa bed with a female (which the next time I saw him he immediately informed me that nothing happened, he apparently had a headache, just to stop her). Me and Rich headed off back to Oxford in Rich's car, while the female with Phil got up and went into John's room and Phil just turned over and went back to sleep (typical Phil) and got the Oxford Tube back later in the day.
