Dear All,

I have been asked to highlight an opportunity for you to possibly work at Children’s Summer Camps in the USA in the university summer break.  I agree with the email below that Mountaineering Society members would be ideal candidates.

Please read on below and attend the meetings on Monday if you’re interested.

Thanks

27th October 2007

Hi folks,

Hope you’ve all had a good week.  I can’t believe it’s week six already!

  • This Week’s Social
  • Next Week’s Social
  • Day Trip
  • Weekend Trip
  • Hoodies
  • BMC Lecture

This Week’s Social

This week’s social will be held at Morals Bar.  However, before we go there we’ll meet in the Sports Bar at the regular time of 8:30 and we’ll head down to Morals around 9ish.  Feel free to join us later if you want.

Next Week’s Social

Since we’ll need to make final arrangements for the day trip, we’ll be back in the Sports Centre bar next week.

Day Trip

We’ve had a really good response to the day trip; it’s now fully booked.  Just to remind everyone who’s going, we’re walking in the Brecon Beacons on Saturday 8th November, leaving from the Sports Centre at 6:30am.

Like any trip you’ll need a basic amount of equipment, including:

Compulsory

  • Waterproof top/jacket and trousers (they don’t have to be breathable, but this is definitely an advantage)
  • Walking trousers (preferably made with a synthetic fabric so that they can dry quickly, but absolutely no denim)
  • Walking boots (they don’t have to be waterproof or breathable, but it’s certainly nicer if they are.  If you don’t have boots then suitable walking shoes such as Merrell or North Face trainers may be OK, but at the committee’s discretion)
  • Rucksack (only needs to be a day sack of around 20 – 30 litres)
  • Warm clothing (Fleece tops are good, as are any clothes made using synthetics or merino wool.  Cotton clothes are ok, but they tend not to dry and don’t allow sweat to escape)
  • Gloves and a hat

Optional

  • Torch (a head torch is best, but any kind would do)
  • Pocket Knife

Obviously we are conscious that this equipment could be quite expensive for any new members that don’t already have any of it, but we are happy to offer you advice regarding what to buy and the cheapest places to buy them.

You’ll also need to bring any food with you that you want for the day.  Once we’re done with the walk we’ll stop off for an evening meal in a pub on the way home.

Can those of you who haven’t paid yet do so ASAP please.  Also, if you haven’t yet paid for your Outdoor Pursuits Membership (insurance) you’ll also need to pay for this.  I can give you an application form at the next social.  This needs to be completed and returned with the £25 fee to the Sports Centre reception.

Any questions let us know.

Weekend trip

We still have two spaces left on the trip if anyone would like to take one of them.  To those of you that are coming can we have all of your deposits at this week’s social please.  Regarding insurance and equipment, the same applies as stated above.

We’ll be walking in Snowdonia, North Wales and will be staying in Eric Jones’ camping barn.  You’ll be glad to know that, unlike the Lakes barn, this one does have a shower!!!

Hoodies

This is the last call for Hoodies.  If you want one but haven’t told us yet, can you do so at some point over the next week please.  We’re going to try and subsidise them to make them cost £26 each.

Once we know who wants them we’ll email you to find out sizes, take deposits etc.

BMC Lecture

Tickets for the popular BMC Winter Lectures, one of which is taking place in the Sports Centre on 19th November, are now on sale.  You need to buy them through the mountaineering society so let us know if you would like to go.

The BMC Winter Lectures are a great way to equip yourself with the essential winter skills.  This year they'll be presented by Dave Hollinger (Guide) and Rob Jarvis (Aspirant Guide).  Whatever your aims this season, Dave and Rob will make you aware of the skills required to explore the winter mountains with confidence.  As well as a heap of exciting tales and inspirational photos, topics include:

  • Equipment & clothing
  • Navigation
  • Footwork
  • Route Planning
  • Avalanche awareness
  • Climbing

Tickets cost £5 BMC members (i.e. those who have paid their insurance with the Sports Centre) and £7 non members.  For advance group bookings of 10 or more tickets cost £3.50 each, so if we sign lots of people up on Thursday it will work out quite cheap.

I’m aware that a few people are interested, but unless I receive replies from you it’s difficult for me to work out how many people are coming and if I can therefore get us the discount.

The talk starts at 19:30 and finishes at approximately 21:30.

Hope to see plenty of you at this week’s social.

Have a good one

The committee

21st October 2008

Hey all,

I hope everyone has had a good week.  Enjoy the newsletter and hopefully see you at the social on Thursday....

This Week’s Social – Pub Quiz at The White Horse

We thought we’d have a change of scene again for this week’s social (23rd October), so we’re going to go to the Pub Quiz at the White Horse.  You can find the White Horse just down the road from Gipsy Lane towards Headington (it’s on the corner of Headley Way and London Road).  The quiz starts at 8:30 so we’ll meet at the Sports Centre at 7.30pm and walk over.  If you can’ t make it at that time then please feel free to join us at the White Horse nearer 8.30.  Feel free to ask if you’re still not sure where the pub is.

Next Week’s Social

It is going to be another change of venue for next week’s social (30th Oct).  The plan is to meet in Moral’s Bar at 8.30pm where we can drink, chat, even dance if you feel the need!  We will remind everybody next week.

Day and Weekend Trips

We have finally decided (over a lush lunch of chicken, bacon & cheese!) that the Day Trip is going to commence on Sat 8th November (End of week 7).  We will be going to the Brecon Beacons in South Wales.   It is going to be an early start but we need to make the most of the day.   We will be meeting at 6am at the Sports Centre ready to leave at 6.30am.   We will be signing everyone up for the trip this Thursday at the social and will also be taking payment for the trip; the cost of the is £12.  We are hoping to take the 17 seater bus.  Again this means that places are limited, so to try and make sure that everyone gets to come on a trip, the people who are on the reserve list (there are 14 of you and you should know who you are)  will have first refusal of a space on the day trip.  If you’re on the reserve list and therefore want a place on the trip can you let us know by email before this Thursday please.  If you take a place on the day trip, you will NOT have first refusal on the weekend trip to Wales.

Our next weekend trip will be to Wales staying in the Snowdonia area in our usual barn.  This will be at the end of week 8, meeting at the Sports Centre at 5.00pm on Friday 14th Nov and coming back late Sunday 16th Nov.  The cost of the weekend trip will be £40 per person.  This includes your travel, accommodation, breakfast on the Sat and Sun, lunch the Sat and Sun and dinner on the Sat night.   We will also be signing people up for this trip at the social this Thursday, as well as taking £15 deposit.  We have to be fair to everyone who was not able to come on our first weekend trip because of the oversubscription.  So again if you are on the reserve list please email back ASAP, before Thursday, as that is when we will be signing the other members up for the trip; again we’re expecting there to be a high demand for this trip.

Those on the reserve list will be granted places, among one another, on a first come first served basis, so reply ASAP stating which trip you want to come on.  If people on the reserve list reply after the allocation of new members is full, you will go back on the reserve list for next time.  However, should we not receive a reply from a reserve, we will assume that you don’t want a place and will unfortunately have to take you off the list.  Sounds harsh I know, but it only takes a quick email to ensure that, at the very least, you remain on the list.

Scotland Trip

After careful consideration we’re now thinking that this trip will take place the week immediately after final exams, which will be the last week of May 2009. We will not be taking any names for this trip until nearer the time.  HOWEVER, it is important that if you think you will want to come on the trip, please let us know, as we need to get a rough ideas of numbers so that we can start to plan ahead etc.

Hoodies

Please please please let us know whether you are interested in purchasing a mountaineering  hoodie.  Unfortunately the hoodies will only be for members of the society but remember it only costs £3 to become a member!  The Hoodies that we have in mind are made by Canterbury, the supplier of all Brookes Sport clothing, and will be blue in colour with “Brookes Sport” on the front and “Mountaineering Society” on the rear.  Like the Scotland trip, before we make a decision about getting them we would like to know if the members are at all interested.  Blank Hoodies cost £26, plus £4.60 for embroidery of the lettering.  Depending on interest we may be able to subsidise the cost of the embroidery, leaving a cost to you of £26.

An Illustrated Lecture by the Mountaineer Doug Scott, in Oxford

Doug Scott who was the first British person to reach the summit of Everest, is coming to Oxford in November 2008 to give an illustrated lecture about the challenging descent that he and Chris Bonington made from the Ogre in the Karakora Himalaya in 1977. This is a fantastic story of human endurance given the accident which befell Doug just after reaching the summit, when he broke both his legs. This story has been eclipsed in recent years by Joe Simpson’s ‘Touching the Void’ but it is nevertheless an incredible story of survival as Bonington and Scott had to find tremendous physical and mental resources to get off the mountain alive.

This lecture is being organised as a fundraising event for the charity Community Action Nepal.  Community Action Nepal, which was set up by Doug Scott, seeks to improve literacy and numeracy among children and adults, extend health and dental care, reverse the depopulation of remote villages, develop women’s groups and strengthen indigenous community-based culture. For further information about the charity please contact www.canepal.org.uk

The lecture will take place at the Nelson Mandela Lecture Theatre at the Saïd Business School on Thursday November 27th at 7.30pm and we enclose a flier for further information. Tickets, which cost £12.50/£10 concessions, are available from Blacks in St Aldates or from Oxford 778536.

The Committee

14th October 2008

Hey all,

I hope everyone has had a good week. Enjoy the newsletter and hopefully see you at the social on Thursday....

Lake District Trip

As hopefully all of you will know, the Mountaineering Society ran its first trip of 2008/9 over the weekend with great success.  The trip took place in the Lake District and the walks that we arranged seemed to have had a very positive reaction, greatly helped by the fact that the weather for this time of year was actually pretty good.  The atmosphere among the group was really exciting and it was great to see everyone getting on really well.  The committee would particularly like to thank those of you that came for all your hard work helping to make the trip run so smoothly and for making it so much fun.

Already some photos have been going up on Facebook, and it would be good to see them loaded up onto the Mountaineering Society Group as well please.  If you haven’t already joined the group do a search for “Oxford Brookes Mountaineering Society.”

Missing Storm Shelter

After the Lake District trip we seem to be short of one Vango Storm Shelter (the things in the orange sacks).  Could we have it back ASAP please.  If you can’t arrange for it to be given to one of the committee members could you return it to Stuart McCarroll or Richard Cole at the Sports Centre.  It’s imperative that it is returned by Friday morning so that the Climbing Club can take it away on their trip this weekend.  Thanks!

This Week’s Social - Ice Skating

As we mentioned in the last newsletter, for this week’s social we will be going to the Ice Rink.  On Thursday 16th October we will meet at the Sports Centre at 8:00pm before catching a bus to the rink.  If anyone would like to meet us there instead of at the Sports Centre then feel free; we should be there from 8:45.  With your student card it costs £3.50 and includes skate hire.  Afterwards we will probably go to Que Pasa where the drinks are cheap.

Next Week’s Social

We thought we’d have a change of scene again for next week’s social (23rd October), so we’re going to go to the Pub Quiz at the White Horse.  You can find the White Horse just down the road from Gipsy Lane towards Headington (it’s on the corner of Headley Way and London Road).  The quiz starts at 8:30 so we’ll meet at the Sports Centre at 8:00pm and walk over.  If you already know where the pub is feel free to meet us there instead.  Of course, we’ll remind you in next week’s newsletter of all of the arrangements.

Day and Weekend Trips

Although we haven’t ironed out the final details quite yet, it is likely that the next trip will be a day walk in the Brecon Beacons.  The next weekend trip will be to Snowdonia, North Wales.  Look out for details of the trips in next week’s newsletter.

Scotland Trip

We, the committee, have had a change of plan regarding this year’s Scotland trip.  Instead of it taking place over Easter, when most members including us are busy with field trips, revision and coursework, we’re thinking of holding the Scotland trip during the Christmas break (probably in week two or three of January 2009).  Although the walks that we do will undoubtedly be dictated by the weather and shorter daylight hours, we feel that these disadvantages are outweighed by numerous advantages.  However, before we can make any firm plans we would like to know how many of you would be interested in the trip.  We are NOT taking any names for the trip yet, but if you could indicate your interest to us so that we can be reassured of its viability we would be very glad to hear from you.  To give you an idea of cost we expect it to be somewhere in the region of £150 per person, and this will include all meals with exception of those coming to and from Scotland, transportation and accommodation.  We appreciate that this is significantly higher than the Scotland trip of last year, but is a far truer representation of the various costs involved, particularly of transport.  The trip will last for 6 days (5 nights).

We look forward to hearing from you!

Hoodies

The committee has been considering getting Hoodies to sell to members. Can you let us know if you are interested please.

Keen to go Ice Skating

Go ice-skating with KEEN, a charity that provides recreational activities for children and young adults with special needs.  This is one of the activities of the term and is very popular so we always need plenty of help; this means there has never been a better time to get involved with KEEN!  Friday 17th October they will meet at 5.45pm at the ice-rink on the Oxpens road (or 5.30pm at McDonalds on Cornmarket Street if you're not sure where the ice rink is).  The session finishes by 7.15pm.

New volunteers are always welcome and anybody who comes along for the first time will get a free drink at the pub afterwards!

Socials

This week’s social will be in the usual place at the usual time...the Sport Centre bar at 8:30pm Thurs.  We will have a quick chat about the trip this coming weekend but mostly just enjoy each other’s company.

For the social in Week 4 we will be going ice skating!!  On Thursday 16th Oct we will meet at the Sport’s Centre at 8:00pm before catching a bus to the rink.  If anyone would like to meet us there at 8:45pm then feel free.  With your student card it costs £3.50 and includes skate hire.  Afterwards we will probably go to Que Pasa where the drinks are cheap.

Lakes Trip

I hope all those coming on the trip are looking forward to the Lake District at the weekend.  Just to clarify, we’ll be leaving from the Brookes Sport Centre Car Park at 6:00pm on Friday evening.  Could everyone please make sure that they are at the Sports Centre by 5:30pm please, unless you have made prior arrangements for us to pick you up.

If you haven’t already filled out the attached spreadsheet file can you do so ASAP and return it to me by email please.  If you are unable to open the file can you send me an email with answers to the following instead:

  • ·         Full Name
  • ·         Date of Birth
  • ·         Term Address
  • ·         Term Telephone Number
  • ·         Mobile Telephone Number
  • ·         Next of Kin Address
  • ·         Next of Kin Telephone Number
  • ·         Email Address
  • ·         Medical Conditions

Can anyone who hasn’t yet paid for the trip in full settle what they owe at this week’s social at the latest please.  The Social will be at the usual time of 8:30pm on Thursday in the Sports Bar.

Also, if you have not paid for your insurance can you do that by Thursday as well please, or preferably before!  This can be done by printing and filling out the attached OP Membership form.  You then take the completed form with £25 to the Sports Centre reception, together with your green library card if you are a Brookes Student or Staff member.

Equipment

Just to re-iterate, the following is the list of kit that you need for the trip:

Compulsory

  • ·         Waterproof top/jacket and trousers (they don’t have to be breathable, but this is definitely an advantage)
  • ·         Walking trousers (preferably made with a synthetic fabric so that they can dry quickly, but absolutely no denim)
  • ·         Walking boots (they don’t have to be waterproof or breathable, but it’s certainly nicer if they are.  If you don’t have boots then suitable walking shoes such as Merrell or North Face trainers may be OK, but at the committee’s discretion)
  • ·         Rucksack (only needs to be a day sack of around 20 – 30 litres)
  • ·         Warm clothing (Fleece tops are good, as are any clothes made using synthetics or merino wool.  Cotton clothes are ok, but they tend not to dry and don’t allow sweat to escape.  It’s also important to bring spare clothes just in case you do get wet and for the evenings in the camping barn that can get cold)
  • ·         Sleeping Bag (a warm sleeping bag is a definite must, but we do have a few in our club kit that you could borrow if you don’t have your own – if you need to borrow one let me know because there are a limited number of them)
  • ·         Gloves and a hat
  • ·         Water Bottle (we forgot to mention these last time)
  • ·         Warm socks

Optional

  • ·         Torch (a head torch is best, but any kind would do – you’ll certainly appreciate having a torch with you if you bring one!)
  • ·         Gaiters (useful if we hike in snow)
  • ·         Pocket Knife
  • ·         Sun Screen
  • ·         Sunglasses

The Barn

Information about where we’ll be staying can be found here: http://www.bentscampingbarn.co.uk/homepage.htm

Hopefully by now you’ll be aware that there isn’t a shower I’m afraid, but there is a wash basin so it’s still worth bringing a towel etc.

The approach to the barn will be pretty much pitch black, so the torch I mention above will certainly come in handy, and will help you avoid the cow pats!

Food

Finally, just in case the last newsletter confused you at all, we will be providing breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday, together with dinner on Saturday.  Any food that you want on the journey to the Lake District on Friday night will need to be provided by you.  We will be stopping at a service station on the way if anyone wants to get a meal there.  Also, it’s up to you to pay for your Sunday evening meal which we will be having in a pub in the Lake District.  Should anyone have any dietary requirements that we need to consider could you let us know ASAP please.

If there are any questions let me know.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the social this Thursday.

See you then

Laurie, Joy, Hannah, Peter and Jess – OB Mountaineering Committee

30 September 2008

Hello! and welcome to the beginning of week 2.

I would like to start off with thanking everyone who came along to our first meeting last Wednesday.  Sadly I was not there to meet you all (Joy! - not joy I missed you but Joy is my name).  I am looking forward to meeting you either at the next social or on the first trip.  We had a lot of interest in the Lakes trip (10th-12th Oct) and we're now fully booked!  Big apologies to those who did not manage to get a place, but the names on our reserve list will be given first choice refusal for our second weekend trip this semester.

To all the people who will be attending the first trip:

This is an advised gear list, obviously some things here are more important than others.  Those that everyone should have are marked in BOLD. If you have any queries, or don't have enough equipment, let us know, we may have spares.

  • Windproof top- Fleece or something similar
  • Waterproof jacket (Doesn't have to be breathable, but defiantly an advantage)
  • Walking trousers (NO DENIM)
  • Waterproof trousers (Being wet is not fun)
  • Walking Boots (Again don't have to be waterproof/breathable, but can stop you getting blisters)
  • Water or Sports Drink (Bring a bottle you can refill)
  • Rucksack (only needs to be a day sack of around 20-30litres)
  • Food (Lunch, energy bars, & sweets which are very important in hypothermic conditions.)

Now we need to talk money!  The next step before coming on your first trip is to pay for BMC (British Mountaineering Council) insurance at the cost of £25. This is absolutely mandatory I’m afraid,  but it does cover you for a full year. The deadline for final payments for the trip fee is the Thursday 9th of October at our social, please can you make sure you pay your deposit this Thursday.  Anyone who does not pay their deposit will unfortunately have to relinquish their place.

As you can see above our next social is this Thursday, at the Sports Centre bar at 8.30pm.  It will be great to see you all there, have a few drinks and tie up any loose ends regarding the trip.  Anyone not on the trip please do pop along too as I promise we are lovely people and I for one would like to meet you all!

The weekend just gone has been a very exciting/tiring weekend for your committee members. We all had the chance to go to the Peak District to attend a training weekend.  You can now all feel extremely safe in our hands!  We concentrated mostly on navigation and also on some rope work to ensure all our members feel safe and happy at all times (don't' worry, we won't use ropes for climbing, only as a safety backup).

Finally, this year the society will be selling Pleasuredome and Peachy tickets as a way of raising club funds, so if you want a ticket for either of these events we will be selling them on Thursday.

We hope you all have a wonderful week,

Joy Castleton and Hannah Watson

(Double Vice presidents!)

22 September 2008

Dear All,

Welcome to the Mountaineering Society and the first newsletter of the 2008-2009 academic year.  My name is Laurie Anderson, and apart from being a sixth year Architecture student, I have the privilege of being the new Mountaineering President.

Within the society I am ably assisted by numerous existing and experienced members, together with my committee that includes Joy Castleton and Hannah Watson.  I joined the society last year having already had some experience of mountaineering before hand, but we find that a lot of our members start with little, if any, experience before going on to having a fantastic time with us and making plenty of new friends along the way.

Most of you will have been introduced to us at the Fresher’s and Sport’s Fairs over the past week.  Thanks to those events we now have several new members and around 170 of you signed up for the email newsletter, so it’s great to see such a huge interest in the society.  Thanks!

The First Social

Although we usually meet on Thursday evenings, we will be holding our first Social this Wednesday (24th September) in the Sports Centre bar, meeting from around 8.00pm for an 8.30pm start.  During the meeting I will be introducing the society and hopefully some of the existing members, who I am sure will be glad to share their experiences of the society with you.  This should be an ideal opportunity for you to have a drink, meet some new people, possibly join the society if you haven’t already, and to sign up for the first trip of the year that I will also be introducing.

Society Membership

If there are any of you who would like to become members, who are not already, we will be glad to sign you up.  The cost of membership for the year is £3 and this gets you a discount off of the trips, together with priority emails regarding the trips and other social events.  Hopefully, as the semester progresses we will also be looking into providing other membership benefits such as society branded clothing for example.  If you are unable to make the meeting this Wednesday, but would still like to become a member, we will be more than happy to take your details at a subsequent social or you can contact me directly.

Lake District Trip

The first trip of this semester will be to the Lake District, in Cumbria, at the end of Week 3.  This will be a weekend trip, leaving from the University Sport Centre at 6.00pm on Friday 10th October and returning late on Sunday (12th September) night.  We will spend Saturday and Sunday walking in the mountains, and we will be staying in a camping barn just outside of the park, details of which can be found here: http://www.bentscampingbarn.co.uk/

The trip will cost £35 per person (£45 for non-members) and includes transport (via sport centre buses), accommodation, breakfast and lunch for both days, and Saturday evening’s meal.  On Sunday we typically eat an evening meal at a nearby pub.  If you plan on attending any of the trips it is also necessary for you to become a member of the Sport Centre’s Outdoor Pursuits club at a cost of £25.  This gives you insurance cover from the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) for a year, which can also be used if you attend any of the trips organised by the Climbing Club.

I will be taking names for the trip on Wednesday and have allocated ten spaces to existing members and ten to new members, giving a total of twenty.  These will be filled on a first come first served basis, but once the trip has been filled we will then take an additional five names as reserves should anyone have to pull out.  If you would like to come on the trip we ask that a minimum deposit of £10 be paid when you sign up.

Equipment

Due to the nature of the mountaineering and the environment in which we do it, it is important that anyone coming on the trips has certain necessary equipment.  Below is a list of this equipment, together with some suggested additional items that you may find useful to have:

Cotton clothes are ok, but they tend not to dry and don’t allow sweat to escape.  It’s also important to bring spare clothes just in case you do get wet and for the evenings in the camping barn that can get cold)
  • Sleeping Bag (a warm sleeping bag is a definite must, but we do have a few in our club kit that you could borrow if you don’t have your own)
  • Gloves and a hat

Optional

  • Torch (a head torch is best, but any kind would do)
  • Gaiters (useful if we hike in snow)
  • Pocket Knife
  • Sun Screen
  • Sunglasses

Obviously we are conscious that this equipment could be quite expensive for any new members that don’t already have any of it, but we are happy to offer you advice regarding what to buy and the cheapest places to buy them.

Finding Out More and Contacting Us

As some of you may already be aware, we have a web site where you can find out more about the society, the address for which is www.obmountaineering-memories.co.uk.  Some of the information is a little old I am afraid, but it should still give you a decent idea of what we’re about and the kind of things that we get up to.  Additionally we have a Facebook group that you can join if you are interested, which is called “Oxford Brookes Mountaineering Society.”

Should you wish to contact us, but are unable to make any of the meetings, feel free to email obmountaineering@live.co.uk.

That’s about it for now.  Hopefully we will see you on Wednesday, but if you can’t make it the next social after that will be at the regular time of 8:30pm on Thursday 2nd October.

Kind regards

Laurie Anderson
